Tantra massage in Amsterdam for an evening with nothing after it
Tantra is the slow one, paced on breath rather than on a sequence of strokes, and it is the format that needs the evening to have nothing waiting on the other side of it. An hour is not really enough: the first twenty minutes are spent getting a working body to stop drafting tomorrow, and an hour that starts there ends before the session has properly begun. Ninety minutes is where it starts making sense and two hours is where couples on an added weekend tend to land. For two people who have spent a week on opposite schedules, it does something the faster formats do not, which is to put you both on the same rhythm for a while rather than simply in the same room. Whichever therapist takes it decides what her session includes and says where her limits are before it starts, and the pace is the part she controls most deliberately.
Origins
The word covers a long and contested history, and what reaches a hotel room in Amsterdam is a late and western branch of it: breath-led bodywork that came out of the human potential movement of the nineteen seventies and borrowed a vocabulary from much older Indian traditions without inheriting their structure. The useful thing to know is what the branch kept, which is the emphasis on pace, attention and breathing rather than on pressure and technique. Practitioners in Europe have been teaching that version for around fifty years, and it is the version on this roster.
The technique
Speed is the variable, not force. She works at roughly a third of the pace of an ordinary oil session, with long passes that do not stop and start, and she matches the timing of her hands to the timing of your breathing rather than to a sequence she has memorised. Pressure stays moderate throughout, because deep pressure produces a bracing response that undoes exactly what the session is building. Where a body tenses she slows down instead of pushing, which is the opposite of what a clinical treatment would do.
What to expect
The room gets dimmed and warmed before anything else happens, and she will ask for a few minutes of nothing at all, which feels strange for about ninety seconds and then stops feeling like anything. Breathing comes first and stays underneath the whole session. The work itself is slow, deliberate and given with the whole hand, and contact is not broken once it has started. With a therapist each, the two of you are usually asked to lie within reach of one another, because breathing tends to synchronise on its own and the session works with that rather than against it. With one therapist between you, the change from one to the other happens once and is made without breaking the shape of the evening. She states her limits at the start in her own words and they hold until she leaves.
Who it suits
Couples on the free evening or the added weekend, with nothing to be conscious for in the morning. The partner who cannot stop thinking about the week and has said so. Two people who have done the faster formats before and want to know what the extra time buys. It suits a quiet room and a couple willing to spend the first twenty minutes doing nothing much.
Benefits
It is the format that works with a body that is wide awake and unwilling to settle, rather than arguing with it. Couples describe the same thing afterwards: the point at which the week stopped being present in the room. For the partner who has been performing in front of strangers since Monday, that is often the first hour of the trip where nothing is being asked of them.
Length
Ninety minutes is the shortest length worth booking and 540 euros for two of you sharing one therapist. Two hours at 720 is the usual choice on an evening with a free morning behind it, and three hours at 1,080 suits the added Saturday. Sixty minutes is available and honestly better spent on an oil session instead.

Questions
Is ninety minutes really the minimum, or is that a sales line?
It is arithmetic rather than a sales line. A working body spends the first fifteen to twenty minutes of any session still half in the day it just had, and tantra spends longer there than the oil formats do because it is not trying to hurry the process. An hour leaves perhaps thirty usable minutes. Ninety leaves seventy, which is a different evening.
One of us has an eight o'clock meeting. Is this a bad choice?
It is the wrong night for it. Tantra works properly when the evening can run over by twenty minutes without anybody counting, and a night with an early alarm cannot absorb that. Take an oil session at ninety minutes instead and keep tantra for the Friday or the added weekend.
Can we do this with a therapist each, or does it only work with one?
Both work. With a therapist each at 720 euros an hour, the two of you run in parallel and breathing tends to fall into step without anybody arranging it. With one therapist at 360, the session moves between you once and the person waiting is genuinely part of the room rather than sitting out. The second needs less notice.
Neither of us has done anything like this. Is that a problem?
No, and most couples who book it have not. Nothing is expected of you and nothing has to be learned in advance. She sets the pace, says at the start what her session includes and what her limits are, and the only useful preparation is not eating a heavy dinner an hour beforehand.
